Mathematics Teaching and Research
Teacher / Researcher / Teacher Educator
Dr Tom Francome is a Senior Fellow in the Centre for Mathematical Cognition at Loughborough University. His role in the Centre is to work to integrate basic research, academic scholarship, and practical experience. He also leads on the mathematics PGCE. Tom contributed lesson materials for the EEF funded project on Best Practice in Mixed-Attainment Teaching. This work was awarded the 2016 BCF-BERA Routledge Curriculum Journal Prize.
Tom has extensive experience of teaching in schools, educating teachers and working with external partners, including schools and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics. He has conducted and analysed surveys of teachers’ beliefs and practices and students’ perceptions of learning mathematics and has supported teachers’ professional development through books, professional journal articles, in schools and at teacher conferences. Tom also has experience disseminating research findings to teachers for classroom use. He is interested in all aspects of educational research but in particular equitable approaches to teaching mathematics and the development of expertise. Tom’s doctoral research explored the nature of practising in mathematics. More recently his focus has expanded to the wider mathematics curriculum. Tom is currently working on mathematical games to generate practice – particularly games to develop a relational understanding of multiplication.
Tom enjoys talking about himself in the third person.
